Throughout the Onimusha series, most of the characters' names seem to be either related to historical figures or from William Shakespeare's play Hamlet. The first description is of the history/or character information from the Hamlet, followed by the description in the Onimusha game. This page seems very messy so I shall try tidying it up later on.

Akechi Mitsuhide: A Samurai who was a general under daimyo Oda Nobunaga. Later on, he betrayed him. (Onimusha 3) Uncle of Samanosuke who led a revolt against Oda Nobunaga at Honno-ji temple
Akechi Samanosuke Hidemetsu: A Japanese Samurai during the Sengoky period. (Onimusha 1,3) The hero of the series who has been given the Oni Gauntlet by the Ogres/Oni.
Ankokuji Ekei: A diplomat of the Mōri clan who lost against Tokugawa Ieyasu at the Battle of Sekigahara. (Onimusha 2) A monk who enjoys money, women, and drinking. Fights with a spear.
Claudius: King of Denmark (Hamlet) Member of the Genma Triumviate who possesses Mitsunari Ishida (Onimusha: Dawn of Dreams) (Onimusha: Dawn of Dreams)
Luis Frois:Porteguese missionary who was a friend of Oda Nobunaga. Guardian of Roberto Frois who is possessed by Rosencrantz (Onimusha: Dawn of Dreams)
Fortinbras: Prince of Norway (Hamlet) Genma God of Light(Onimusha 1, Onimusha: Dawn of Dreams)
Fuma Kotaro: Served under Hōjō Ujimasa and Hōjō Ujinao. (Onimusha 2) A Fuma ninja who works for the Fuma clan. After being abandoned by his mother, it is hard for him to trust women.
Gertrude: Queen of Denmark and Hamlet's mother (Hamlet) Appears as a creation of Guildenstern.(Onimusha 3)
Guildenstern: Friend of Hamlet (Hamlet) Genma scientist (Onimusha 1, 3)
Heihachirou Tadakatsu Honda Japanese general (later a daimyo) of the late Sengoku through early Edo period who served Tokugawa Ieyasu. (Tadakatsu Heihachiro Honda):(Onimusha 3) Ieyasu's general who helps Samanosuke in many times. He wields a spear.
Hideyasu Yuki (Soki): Second son of Ieyasu Tokugawa who was a Japanese daimyo. (Onimusha: Dawn of Dreams) he is the protagonist who goes by the name Sōki.
Marcellus: In the play Hamlet he is an officer/Danish soldier. (Onimusha)
Mitsunari Ishida: An administrator of Sakai (Onimusha: Dawn of Dreams) Hideyoshi's retainer who is possessed by a member of the Genma Triumvirate named Claudius.
Mori Ranmaru: An attendant to Oda Nobunaga who also had a relationship. (Onimsuha 3) A loyal servant to Nobunaga.
Nankobo Tenkai: A Japanese Tendai Buddhist monk. (Onimusha: Dawn of Dreams) In the game, he is Akechi Samanosuke whose hair has turned white after the defeat of Oda Nobunaga in Onimusha 3.
Oda Nobunaga: A daimyo during the Sengoku period (Onimusha 1,3) Genma lord
Ohatsuhime: Daughter of Oichi (Onimusha: Dawn of Dreams)
Oichi/Oyu: Had an arranged marriage to create an alliance between the clans of Oda and Azai. She is the younger sister of Oda Nobunaga (Onimusha 2) In the game, she assists Yagyu Jubei in stopping her brother Nobunaga.
Ophaelia: She is the daughter of Polonius (Hamlet) Member of the Genma Triumvirate who possesses Lady Yodo(Onimusha: Dawn of Dreams)
Reynaldo: Servant to Polonius (Hamlet) A Genma creation of Guildenstern (Onimusha)
Rosencrantz: Friend of Hamlet (Hamlet) Member of the Genma Triumvirate who possesses Luis Frois(Onimusha: Dawn of Dreams)
Saiga Magoichi: Leader of Sakai Ikki (Onimusha 2) Leader of the Saiga Shu gun troop. He is the mentor of Ohatsu from Onimusha: Dawn of Dreams
Shikon Shima: A Japanese samurai during the late Sengoku period. (Onimusha: Dawn of Dreams) A human turned into a Genma
Toukichiro Kinoshita/Toyotomi Hideyoshi: A daimyo during the Sengoku period who is the successor of Oda Nobunaga.(Onimusha 1, Dawn of Dreams) A shady man who tries to tempt Samanosuke in joining him. Later on as Toyotomi Hideyoshi, he works alongside the Genma to resurrect Fortinbras.
Yagyu Munenori: (Onimusha: Dawn of Dreams)
Yagyu Jubei: Yagyū Sekishūsai Taira-no-Munetoshi was a samurai in Japan’s Sengoku period famous for mastering the Shinkage-ryū school of combat, and introducing it to the Tokugawa clan.(Onimusha 2) The protagonist of the game who has Oni blood within him. In the manga Onimusha: Night of Genesis, Yagyu Jubei makes an appearance although he looks much older with Tenkai referring to him as Sekishūsai.
Yodo-dono: Daughter of Oichi and Ohatsu's elder sister who was also known as Cha-cha. She is the concubine of Toyotomi Hideyoshi. (both history and Onimusha: Dawn of Dreams) In the game, she is possessed by Ophaelia.
